Rachel Webb's Portfolio: About Me

About Rachel Webb

I'm a passionate game developer working on my BFA in game design at George Mason university. I have a wide array of skills including art, writing, design, and programming. I'm a curious and quick learner, picking up things from programming in unity to making a website in HTML. My favorite part of game development is being able to combine my skills and interests to create a wonderful experience for the player, using writing to tell an compelling story, art to help create a beautiful enviroment, programming to build fun and engaging mechanics, and design to combine it all together into a cohesive experience.

As a senior Game Design student I am currently looking for potential internships to finish my degree as well as potential employers for once I enter the workforce. As you can see from my portfolio I am flexible and able to fill many roles, from programmer to writer, though a general design position would make best use of my skills. I work well both remote and in person. Though I would do best in a company filled with other passionate creatives, I also do well in more formal enviroments so long as I am given clear deadlines and any necesary support.

Bio

I'm the third of four girls born to a loving couple in Northern Virginia. Growing up I was extremely creative, enjoying art class and writing poetry in English, but I was also fascinated by computer science. I took a programming course in middle school and made my first computer game on a calculator, using basic to make a simple rock paper scissors game. In highschool I went to Forest Park for programming, but still took plenty of creative classes including three years of creative writing, even becoming co-editor-in-chief of the Ursa Major Literary magazine. Even though COVID moved classes online I perservered and graduated summa-cum-laude with a GPA of 4.127. During this time games were always one of my favorite pastimes, and I would play games on our families' Nintendo Wii and on my computer when I had the time, eventually upgrading to a playstation 4 and getting myself a gaming laptop to run my ever increasing game library. I always loved how games combined both art and programming, and this was what led me to want to pursue game design as a career.

After graduating from high school I decided to enter the ADVANCE program at NOVA, wanting to get a degree in Game Design, but also wanting to save money and spend time with my family, and especially my mother, who was suffering from cancer. I graduated from NOVA in two years, earning my Associates degree, and was ready to transfer to George Mason. But in July of 2023, a few weeks before I was set to move to George Mason and begin living on campus, my mother lost her battle with cancer. My mother was a wonderful person, intelligent, kind, and the best mom you could ask for. She helped me through my struggles growing up, and supported me with my mental health after I was diagnosed with depression. Despite the loss and the grief, I was able to continue with my studies, finishing my first year on campus with a 4.0 GPA for all my classes. I began making games in unity, learned 3D modeling, and developed the skills needed to take care of myself and to succeed in group projects, being labled MVP by my teammates for one of my finals.

Though I continue to struggle with mental health and am still grieving my mother, I am working hard to earn my degree and am excited to enter the work force. I can't wait to see what kind of games I can make, both on my own and with other people, and I hope that this website continues to grow as I work on my skills.
